Shipping Vehicles

Move me to Hawaii

Instructions: Shipping Your Vehicle

Shipping your vehicle to Hawaii is quite simple. You have two options. The first is to drive your car to a west coast port and deliver your car to either Long Beach or Oakland port in California. We can book the vehicle and process relevant documentation on your behalf.
Your second option is to have Premier Van Lines arrange to ship your car for you. We will arrange to have your car picked up by one of our licensed auto transporters and deliver it to either pick up your vehicle at your residence or if you are moving back to the mainland, deliver your vehicle to your residence.

If you choose to have Premier Van Lines ship your car, we will do the following:
First we will have one of our licensed auto carriers pick your vehicle up at your residence, provided the truck can access your house. There will be some instances where you will have to meet the truck nearby your house or at one of our nationwide terminals. The trucker will then deliver your vehicle to a west coast port.

Once your vehicle is delivered to the port your vehicle is loaded into the ship and safely secured for transport to Hawaii. Sailing times will vary, but once loaded, the average is six to seven days. Upon arrival at the designated port in Hawaii, you will be notified to pick up your vehicle.

Prepare Your Car

The following important information will help speed the shipping of your car along:

Vehicles must be in operating condition when tendered for shipment, with a working emergency brake, and must either be licensed or qualified to be licensed for operation on public streets or highways.

We reserve the right to reject receipt of cargo if the cargo does not meet the requirements for safe transportation & handling by our stevedore or our vessel operations.

Wash Vehicle.
All vehicles must have a clean exterior so that a vehicle survey may be conducted at the load port. Dirty vehicles will not be accepted.

Note: We cannot ship vehicles with cracked or damaged windshields or windows. They will need to be fixed prior to shipment.

Remove All Personal Belongings
The only items acceptable for shipment in your automobile are those tools and accessories normally attached to the vehicle, or permanently installed in the dash, doors, rear deck, or console. For example, if not bolted in, the following items should be removed:

loose radios
CB's
tape players and tapes
compact disc players and discs
portable telephones of any type
power boosters
equalizers
radar scanners
extra speakers
decorative ornaments
auto protective covers/auto bras
truck tailgate nets
auto roof racks if not factory installed
theft alarm systems (if you choose to leave the car alarm in your vehicle, make sure that the system is disengaged prior to shipment)

Gas
Please deliver your vehicle with 1/4 tank or less fuel.
Our port personnel will do the rest, and make sure your vehicle is ready to go when it reaches its destination. If you are shipping a vehicle powered by an alternative fuel -(propane, electric, natural gas, etc), please contact us at 1.877.784.2111 for special shipping instructions.

Fire Extinguishers
Fire Extinguishers must be removed from all vehicles. Federal regulations do not permit fire extinguishers to be shipped with your automobile.

Propane tanks
Vehicles with propane tanks for auxiliary uses must be delivered for shipment with the propane tanks empty of any liquid or fumes. The empty tank must be tagged and certified as "gas free" by an authorized propane dealer or service company. We recommend that you verify the cost of emptying and certifying propane tanks. It may be less costly to purchase a new tank at your destination.

Size restrictions for shipping my vehicle
The maximum dimensions of a passenger type vehicle (sedans, SUV's, passenger vans, station wagons, limousines) are 21'8"L x 8'W x 7'H. Vehicles with greater dimensions will be quoted on an individual basis. Make sure to include measurements of roof racks, bumpers, hitches, and any extended items on your vehicle. If your vehicle is larger than the above size restrictions it will cost substantially more to ship because it will be put into the oversize vehicle section of the ship. Vehicles will be measured at the port and if it is larger than the maximum size restrictions, your shipment will be held and you will be notified of the extra costs prior to shipping. These restrictions are important. Over-sized vehicles are extremely expensive to ship.

Liability coverage for my vehicle
Under our contract with you, Premier's  liability for damage to your vehicle is limited to the amount of damage sustained to your vehicle for which Premier is responsible, not to exceed the market value of your vehicle or $8,000, whichever is less. However, we will agree to increase the limit of our liability up to the value that you declare for your vehicle, provided that you pay an additional charge equal to 2% of the entire declared value of your vehicle. Please let our Customer Service Representative know your desire to declare a higher value at the time of booking.

Vehicle transit time
Unfortunately it is difficult for any overseas carrier to guarantee an exact arrival date. However, when a vehicle is delivered to our terminal we can provide you with an estimated date of arrival. When your vehicle is loaded aboard our ship we will send you an arrival notice advising you of the day our ship is due to arrive in to the destination port and when your vehicle will be available for pickup. There is no late arrival compensation through any of our carriers.

LICENSING MY VEHICLE IN HAWAII: You must provide proof  that your vehicle was transported into Hawaii with a Bill of Lading from one of the authorized ocean transportation companies. This Bill of Lading must be provided must show the vehicle on the Bill of Lading. Some companies say you can load your car into a container with your household goods without t notifying the steamship company to get your business. This will result in you having to pay the steamship company an additional charge of the car shipping costs in addition to the container costs. Make sure you have a Bill of Lading that proves how you got your vehicle to Hawaii. If you have any questions, feel free to call us 877.784.2111.
